Vulcano is the most southern of all islands of the archipelago and has an extension of 21 sqKm. Its name derives from the overlooking 90.000 year old active volcano.
Both the Greeks and the Romans were so bewildered by this young volcano that they first called the island Terasia (hot earth) and then Thermessa (hot) and devoted to their gods; the Greeks to Efesto and then the Romans to Vulcano, considering it a sacred island (Hierà). The finding of caves dug out of tuff near the southern plain of the island suggest that the sacredness of the place derives from the tradition of burying the dead near the god Vulcano, to have a good position in the other world. The first of seven pearls, the closest to Milazzo (12 miles distant), it remains a jewel of rare beauty with authentic nature manifested through fumaroles, pools with thermal mud, sites near the port, sulphur exhalations and bubbling hot springs near the eastern beach.
From the port of Gelso, the volcano dominates the island, watching over it like a guardian. Trekking and nature lovers can reach its tip after a fifty minute climb. The view from the top worth the effort of the climb, with the Stromboli’s volcano appearing through the other six islands with its smoke signals which are echoed by those of the small volcano of Lentia.
